Parent Candidates

Julia Boglione-Pollard

Hello, my name is Julia and I am a parent of a first grader at Albert Einstein Elementary. As someone who comes from a family of educators, I have always valued the importance of education. However, I am also acutely aware of the inequalities, barriers, and unique challenges that some students face in accessing a quality education. And, as a parent and community member, I have a vested interest in the school’s success and believe that serving on the council will allow me to be a voice for my fellow parents and students.

I believe that every student, regardless of their background or current life situation, deserves equal access to a quality education. This belief is what fuels my passion to get involved in the school site council. Drawing on my past experience in higher education working with special student groups, I would advocate for every student and work to remove obstacles that prevent them from reaching their full potential.

I am committed to working collaboratively with other council members to identify and address issues that affect our school community. By working together as a team, we can ensure that every child at Albert Einstein Academy Charter School has the opportunity to receive an excellent education that prepares them to become responsible, kind, and forward-thinking leaders and citizens.

 

Richard Butcher

Richard is a San Diego native, where his family has been anchored for over 58 years. He has taught or coached in the San Diego Unified School District, the Grossmont High School District, the Sweetwater Union High School District, The Bishop’s School, and University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral Catholic).  Additionally, Richard served 4 years as the Director of Admissions at St. Francis School in Louisville, KY (now Francis Parker), before returning home to enroll his then Kindergarten and Second Grade daughters at Albert Einstein Academies Charter Elementary School.  Both daughters are current Sixth and Eighth Grade students respectively, at Albert Einstein Academies Charter Middle school.
 
Richard earned his first degree (A.B.) with a dual sociology/pre-med focus from Harvard University in 1988. During his time on Capitol Hill working with Congresswoman Diane E. Watson’s Education and Health portfolio (’00-’09), Richard chose to pursue an advanced degree, in 2005, earning an International Executive MBA degree from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. 
 
With more than three decades of leadership/management in the public and private sector, Richard is a currently working with sports, mental health, and substitute Teaching at Albert Einstein Middle School and Helix Charter High School.  He is just coming off a 5 year stint as executive administrative advisor at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego (RCHSD).
 
Among several current projects, Richard is a co-founding architect of Champions For Total Health (CTH) initiative that is focused on decreasing teenage student athletes’ stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide. “There is no health without mental health.” 
 
Under Richard’s guidance and experience, RCHSD collaborated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness San Diego (NAMI SD), and the California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section (CIFSDS), to create this unique initiative that is initially targeting the approximately 60,000 San Diego high school student athletes.
 
Richard can bring educational organization experience, AEA lived experience, educational policy, and governance experience to the SSC team.  He would be happy to serve a 2 year term, especially as AEA prepares for its newest grade level expansion.
 
 

Maria Horsley

I am a long-time educator, researcher, and activist working with underserved groups in San Diego, and I am passionate about fostering effective, equitable, and inclusive learning environments. In my role as a founding member of Borderlands Relief Collective and as a volunteer with Border Kindness, I spend a lot of my free time providing aid along the U.S./Mexico borderlands and advocating for the humane and dignified treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. My two daughters are currently enrolled in Kindergarten and 2nd grade at AEA, and they love their school community. This is a great opportunity for me to give back and to support in ways that align with my prior experiences.

 

Mathias Kill

Hello AEA families!

Meaningful and active Family Engagement is crucial to our children’s success at school and in life. I am committed to work to encourage and facilitate all AEA families engaging as the equal educational partners we are. I believe strongly in the value of education and of the importance of everyone having access to academics, enrichment and Social Emotional Learning. We are so lucky to be part of the AEA Community with these strengths as well as the IB Philosophy and the opportunity to learn German and Spanish.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve this past year on our School Site Council. I am writing to ask you to vote for me again so that I can continue to represent you and all of our AEA families.

As SSC Vice Chairperson, I have devoted significant time and energy into helping to move the SSC forward and toward its full potential – a collaboration between families and school personnel working to benefit our students. Our SSC can and should continue to be a bridge between our families and our school. Transparency, accountability, and teamwork are essential to this relationship, and I pledge that my efforts on the SSC will continue to be motivated by and with these principles clear and in the forefront of my mind.

My own efforts on the SSC were instrumental in creating both our first Parent and Family Engagement Policy and the recent AEA Family Engagement Survey. I actively participated on all of our SSC subcommittees, especially in the work creating recommendations for the AEA 2023/24 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). I have taken the opportunity to meet and begin establishing relationships with members of our newly-formed English Learner Advisory Committee (D)ELAC. Outside of the SSC, I volunteer with Running Club twice a week and continue to serve as the Vice President of Friends of AEA.

I grew up in Chicago, the son of a police officer and an Elementary School teacher. I studied Chemical Engineering before earning my Medical Degree and pursuing a General Surgery residency. I then moved to San Diego where I met Dan, my partner of now over 20 years. After serving in the U.S. Navy and fulfilling my scholarship obligations, I completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and worked as a Trauma Surgeon for a decade. After our daughter Melinda and our son Dean were born, I retired from medicine to devote my full time and attention to my most important calling – being a full-time Dad.

Next year will be my family’s fourth year at AEA, with Melinda in Third Grade and Dean in Second Grade. I am passionate about helping to make AEA the best school possible for them and for all of our children – in Elementary, Middle, and High School. I would be honored if you would vote for me to continue to represent and advocate for you and our families in the valuable work we do as a SSC.

 

Sarah Peterson

Hello, hallo, and hola.

I’m thrilled to (re)introduce myself to this powerful AEA community and run again for a family/parent position on the 2023-24 School Site Council. I am a mom to three children, two of which are current AEA Elementary School students: Ida, a Kindergartener and Viktor, a 3rd grader. I hope to earn your vote for the coming school year because of the authentic passion I bring to the field of education as both a mother and an experienced educator.

A personal mission of mine is to take action and do my part in supporting the promise of America’s public schools. I believe the AEA campuses are a beacon of opportunity to the families served, being a place of hope and possibility, a safe haven and resource hub, and a chance for a family’s child to be seen and loved in their full humanity. I am currently the Co-Chair of the 2022-23 SSC Academic Plan Subcommittee. Working together with teachers, fellow parent colleagues, and administration, we examined AEA student performance scores in order to make recommendations for the 2023-24 AEA Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). We determined that Multilingual Learners (MLs) should be one of the main focuses of our SSC and that Plan. Because of my role on the SSC, I have also attended multiple AEA District English Learner Advisory Committee ([D]ELAC) meetings in order to listen to the needs of our community’s Multilingual Learners. I believe that I especially bring value to the SSC when it comes to multilingual families. Because of my professional experiences as a classroom teacher in the National School District, whose schools are located ten miles from the Mexico-US international border, I developed the capacity for teaching English and Spanish foundational literacy skills and working with Multilingual Learners and Emergent Bilinguals within diverse instructional contexts and grade levels.

In addition to “mom”-ing, professionally, I am moving into my 18th year as an educational leader who supports teachers and school leaders across San Diego County. I am the current Regional Director of the California Reading & Literature Project (CRLP) at the UCSD Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment & Teaching Excellence (CREATE). In that role as an equity leader, I have traveled to many other schools and have made multiple contacts throughout San Diego County, promoting evidenced-based ELA/literacy practices TK–12, English Language Development and Multilingual Learner pedagogy. In addition, I am pursuing the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Degree from the UCSD and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). I hold a Master of Education Degree and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with Bilingual CLAD (Spanish) Emphasis Credential from UC San Diego and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in Latin American Studies from UC San Diego.

I hope you will consider voting for me so I can continue to fuel the work ignited by the SSC this year.

 

Richard Santini

My name is Richard, and I’m a proud parent if two AEA students, local South Park community member (my home boarders with the elementary school), and I have served on past boards with AEA. I also serve as a board member for District 3 city council planning committee, board member for North Park Little League, and I am a principal scientist in analytical chemistry at a local pharmaceutical company. I will bring local knowledge, city planning, and education interests to the site council. Thank you.

 

Axel Schwarz

As a parent of a first grader at AEA, and an English teacher in public schools for nearly a quarter century, I am very passionate about working on the School Site Council for Albert Einstein Academies. I have served on SSCs in the past as a teacher, and this past year I was on the SSC for AEA. Most of my teaching experience has been in diverse communities whose students speak more than one language and who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. These are exactly the kinds of students the SSC is supposed to help. And since we’ve worked hard this past year to build a foundation from which we can better serve these students, I’d like the opportunity to continue that work. Thank you for your consideration.

 

Sarah Wigdor-Roberts

I am a parent to twin third-graders, who have been attending AEA since kindergarten. In my day job, I work as an attorney for the City of San Diego.

I spent the past year as the Compliance Chair for the School Site Council. I am hopeful to serve another term with the SSC to continue the groundwork that the group put forth last year working on behalf of all AEA families.

Richard Butcher

¡Hola familias AEA!

La participación significativa y activa de las familias es crucial para el éxito de nuestros hijos en la escuela y en la vida. Me comprometo a trabajar para alentar y facilitar que todas las familias de AEA participen como los socios educativos que somos. Creo firmemente en el valor de la educación y en la importancia de que todos tengan acceso a lo académico, a las actividades extracurriculares y al aprendizaje social y emocional. Somos muy afortunados de ser parte de la Comunidad AEA con estos puntos fuertes, así como la Filosofía IB y la oportunidad de aprender alemán y español.

Estoy muy agradecido por la oportunidad de servir este último año en nuestro Consejo Escolar. Les escribo para pedirles que voten por mí de nuevo para que pueda seguir representándolos a ustedes y a todas nuestras familias de AEA.

Estoy encantada de (re)presentarme a esta poderosa comunidad de AEA y postularme nuevamente para un puesto de familia/padre en el Consejo Escolar 2023-24. Soy madre de tres hijos, dos de los cuales son estudiantes actuales de la Escuela Primaria AEA: Ida, estudiante de Kindergarten y Viktor, estudiante de 3er grado. Espero ganar su voto para el próximo año escolar debido a la auténtica pasión que traigo al campo de la educación como madre y educadora experimentada.

Una de mis misiones personales es actuar y contribuir a apoyar la promesa de las escuelas públicas de Estados Unidos. Creo que los campus de AEA son un faro de oportunidades para las familias atendidas, siendo un lugar de esperanza y posibilidad, un refugio seguro y un centro de recursos, y una oportunidad para que el hijo de una familia sea visto y amado en toda su humanidad. Actualmente soy la Co-Presidente del Subcomité del Plan Académico 2022-23 SSC. Trabajando junto con maestros, colegas padres, y la directiva, examinamos las puntuaciones de rendimiento de los estudiantes de AEA con el fin de hacer recomendaciones para el 2023-24 AEA Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). Determinamos que los estudiantes multilingües (ML) deben ser uno de los principales focos de nuestro SSC y ese Plan. Debido a mis experiencias profesionales como maestra en el Distrito Escolar Nacional, cuyas escuelas están ubicadas a diez millas de la frontera internacional entre México y EE.UU., desarrollé la capacidad de enseñar habilidades básicas de alfabetización en inglés y español y trabajar con estudiantes multilingües y bilingües emergentes dentro de diversos contextos de instrucción y niveles de grado.

Además de “mamá”, profesionalmente, estoy entrando en mi 18º año como líder educativa que apoya a los maestros y líderes escolares en todo el condado de San Diego. Soy la actual Directora Regional del Proyecto de Lectura y Literatura de California (CRLP, por sus siglas en inglés) en el Centro de Investigación sobre Equidad Educativa, Evaluación y Excelencia en la Enseñanza (CREATE, por sus siglas en inglés) de UCSD. En ese papel como líder de equidad, he viajado a muchas otras escuelas y he hecho múltiples contactos en todo el condado de San Diego, promoviendo prácticas de ELA / alfabetización basadas en la evidencia TK-12, Desarrollo del Idioma Inglés y pedagogía Multilingüe Learner. Además, estoy cursando el Doctorado en Educación en Liderazgo Educativo de UCSD y la Universidad Estatal de California en San Marcos (CSUSM). Tengo una Maestría en Educación y Credencial en Enseñanza de Múltiples Materias con Énfasis en CLAD Bilingüe (Español) de la UC San Diego y una Licenciatura en Psicología con especialización en Estudios Latinoamericanos de UC San Diego.

Espero que consideren la posibilidad de votarme para que pueda seguir impulsando la labor iniciada por el CDC este año.

Mi nombre es Richard, y soy un orgulloso padre de dos estudiantes de AEA, miembro de la comunidad local de South Park (mi casa es vecina de la escuela primaria), y he servido en juntas anteriores con AEA. También sirvo como miembro de la junta para el Distrito 3 comité de planificación del consejo de la ciudad, miembro de la junta de North Park Little League, y yo soy un científico en química analítica en una empresa farmacéutica local. Axel Schwarz

Como padre de un niño de primer grado en AEA, y un profesor de Inglés en las escuelas públicas durante casi un cuarto de siglo, tengo muchas ganas de trabajar en el Consejo Escolar para Albert Einstein Academies. He servido en SSCs en el pasado como profesor, y este año pasado estuve en el SSC para AEA. La mayor parte de mi experiencia docente se ha desarrollado en comunidades diversas cuyos alumnos hablan más de una lengua y son desfavorecidos socioeconómicamente. Estos son exactamente los tipos de estudiantes a los que se supone que debe ayudar el SSC. Y puesto que hemos trabajado duro este último año para construir una base desde la que podamos servir mejor a estos estudiantes, me gustaría tener la oportunidad de continuar ese trabajo. Soy madre de dos niños gemelos de tercer grado, que asisten a AEA desde el kinder. En mi trabajo de día, trabajo como abogada para la ciudad de San Diego.

Pasé el año pasado como la Presidenta de Cumplimiento para el Consejo Escolar. Tengo la esperanza de servir otro término con el SSC para continuar el trabajo de base que el grupo puso adelante el año pasado trabajando en nombre de todas las familias de AEA.
